City Beet Reporting Vol.1 No.8

CSA Week 4 & online orders & market tomorrow & it's a heat wave

Hello City Beetniks,

Yoohalloo from your extra sweaty farmers! I hope you're all managing to do the bare minimum and stay somewhat comfortable in this record-breaking-existential-climate-dread-inducing heat.

Here's your weekly reminder that CSA pickup and market day are tomorrow!  We have a few veggies available at citybeetfarm.com for online orders, which you'll also be able to pickup at the market table tomorrow. As always, we'll be outside the Federal Store at 10th and Quebec from 4:00 to 6:30 pm.

Please bring your own bags and keep up the good COVID work!

Not a share member?

We have kale, swiss chard, beets, garlic scapes, hopefully strawberries, and salad greens that'll be available at our market stand tomorrow (the eastern portion of our setup, closest to the Federal Store entrance). As of a few minutes ago, you can order swiss chard, kale, or beets ahead of time, on our website, and your order will be ready for you behind the market table as well. Please get your orders in by 10:00 am tomorrow!

CSA 4 Includes:

  • Snap Peas!
  • Mustard & Mizuna Mix
  • Spinach or Lettuce Mix
  • Beets
  • Kale
  • Swiss chard
  • Strawberries
Hopefully the greens this week will make for some nice no-cooking-needed salad meals to get you through the rest of the heat wave.

In other farm news...

  • We've been starting early the past few days to harvest before the full heat hits. I'm not the biggest fan of getting up early, but I've gotta say it sure is nice to finish work at 2:00 pm! And harvesting in the shade is pretty sweet.
  • It was such a joy for me that we were able to use City Beet strawberries in my sister's annual birthday strawberry shortcake! The funny shaped ones made for an excellent decorative topping.

  • Most of the crops are enjoying the heat-- the squash and tomatoes especially have really exploded this past week. The solstice/heat wave combo have had a lot of plants going wild it seems. A few of our lettuces bolted, but I'm happy to report everyone else is hanging in fine, if not thriving.

  • We did our first pea harvest this morning. The plants are well over 7 feet tall in some spots! Snap peas are one of Duncan's favourite crops to grow and to harvest, so today was a highly anticipated one :)

  • Three dahlias opened up yesterday. We got them staked this past week and there are lots more buds on them and our other flower varieties. We're still a few weeks out from having enough to start the flower subscriptions, but it's exciting to see them coming along!

  • In addition to staking dahlias, I also got to build a cucumber trellis AND a runner bean trellis on Friday, so last week was a good one for me. Just wait 'til we build the gourd trellis.
See you tomorrow!
