Field Crew Position with City Beet Farm 2020 Growing Season
About the Farm
City Beet Farm is a small-scale urban farm located in Mount Pleasant, Vancouver that grows vegetables and cut-flowers on 15 sites made up of front and backyards. We use mostly hand tools and ecological farming practices that improve the long-term health of the soil. We work alongside many neighbours and our relationship with the local community is very important to us. We sell our produce and flowers through our weekly CSA, pop-up markets and select grocers. We are excited to share our knowledge and experience with our field crew and to provide a collaborative and supportive work environment.
Our field crew will be involved in all aspects of our business from seeding to selling. The position is an average of 35-40 hours a week from March through October 2020. You will work alongside us during the season with tasks such as weeding, bed prep, transplanting, seeding, harvesting, processing, market prep and other daily jobs at the farm. We often have volunteers and community members help-out during the season, so the ability to take a leadership role and provide direction for volunteers is an asset.
Position: Field Crew (2 positions available)
Hours: Average of 20-30 hrs per week from Late-March through end of April, increasing to 35-40 hrs from May through October
Compensation: $15/hr + access to farm fresh produce, with potential for wage increase and greater responsibility as the season progresses
We are looking for someone with previous farming experience and an interest in sustainable farming, building community and local food. A good work ethic and physical fitness are key, with the desire to work and learn in all weather. We are looking for someone who can work cooperatively in a team as well as independently, and can be self motivated when it comes to completing tasks. The ideal farm hand would be dependable, dedicated and organized, as well as someone personable and friendly. We are a farm with many moving pieces and we are looking for someone who can learn our systems and work cohesively alongside us. In our work, we strive for great quality produce and high production standards, balanced with a fast pace and efficiency. A valid driver’s licence and experience driving with a trailer are an asset.
