City Beet Reporting Vol.1 No.9

CSA Week 5, more online orders, and market tomorrow

Hello City Beetniks,

Week Five. Inconceivable! Pretty neat that not even six months ago I wasn't a farmer and now I get to do this full time and send long emails about it.

I'm also happy to report we got our cooler up and running again after last week's heat exhaustion, and we've got plenty of veggies waiting to meet you tomorrow.

We have salad mix, head lettuces, kale, and beets available at citybeetfarm.com for online orders, which you'll be able to pick up at the market table.

As per usual, CSA pick up, market, and online orders will be outside the Federal Store at 10th and Quebec from 4:00 to 6:30 pm tomorrow.

We'll still be wearing masks at pickup tomorrow, and even with the province now being in Step 3, we hope you'll join us in maintaining physical distancing and being careful to keep our community safe and healthy!

What's in CSA 5, you ask?

  • Snap Peas
  • Beets or Spinach
  • Kale or Swiss chard
  • Romaine Lettuce
  • Carrots!
  • Salad mix
  • Arugula, Mustard greens, or Mizuna
The heatwave's highest temperatures may have passed, but it's still hot out there! Mix your chosen salad greens together for nice big salad to beat the heat.

In other farm news...

  • Sooooo many tomatoes growing out in Southlands. They haven't changed colour yet, but it's going to happen any minute. I can feel it. We gave them a hard prune this week by removing all the leaves below their first fruit. This will hopefully keep them happy and healthy by increasing airflow and decreasing contact with the ground. Pruning all 300 tomato plants in one go made for one big pile of leaves!

  • Some plants didn't like the heat so much. Luckily we didn't lose too much, but some of the smaller snap peas didn't make it through. Don't worry, we still have lots for tomorrow-- it just might mean a smaller harvest next week.

  • Many of our other crops are sizing up nicely, and should be making their way to you in the coming weeks. Get excited for kohlrabi, beans, zucchini, and more!

  • We have encountered a snag (or several) with the gourd trellis structure we wanted to use. We're coming up with something new, but the gourds really want to be trellised already (I will admit to being disappointed also). We'll figure it out, though, which is a big part of the fun!

  • Flowers are blooming! Flower subscription members, keep an eye out for an email later this week about when we'll be starting up.

  • Our hearts go out to the people in and around Lytton who lost their homes and so much more last week. Here's a link to one of the fundraisers going on to help out, if you're able to help.
See you tomorrow!
